How much does a small business website cost in the UK?

From DIY builders to agencies, website prices vary hugely. Here’s what you actually get at each level, and what to watch out for.

Ask five people what a website costs and you’ll get five answers, from free to £20,000. Here’s a plain breakdown for UK small businesses.

DIY website builders: around £10 to £40/month

Wix, Squarespace and similar tools are fine for a simple start. The catch: your time, a template look, and often weak SEO and speed unless you know what you’re doing.

Freelancer or small agency: around £500 to £2,500

A custom design in your brand, mobile-friendly, with contact forms, click-to-call and basic SEO. This is where most small businesses get the best value.

E-commerce: around £1,000 to £5,000+

An online shop (for example WooCommerce) adds products, payments, delivery options and stock, so it costs more to build and to look after.

Ongoing costs to budget for

  • Domain name: around £10 to £20 a year
  • Hosting: from a few pounds a month
  • Updates, backups and security: often £30 to £100 a month

What to check before you pay

  • Will you own the website when it’s paid for?
  • Is basic SEO, Google Analytics and Search Console included?
  • Can you edit text and images yourself?
  • What happens if it breaks?
